How to Calculate Speed Using the Formula

Speed measures how much distance an object covers per unit of time. The formula is simple, and every variation on this page flows from it.

Speed Equals Distance Divided by Time

The core formula:

Speed = Distance ÷ Time

In simple terms, speed is defined as the rate at which an object moves over a given distance. If you drive 150 miles in 3 hours, your speed is 50 miles per hour.

You can rearrange the same equation to solve for distance or time:

  1. Distance = Speed × Time
  2. Time = Distance ÷ Speed

These three forms cover every standard speed, distance, and time problem.

Average Speed vs. Velocity in Physics

Speed is a scalar. It tells you how fast something moves, with no direction attached. Velocity is a vector. It includes both speed and direction.

For everyday travel calculations, speed is what you need. Velocity matters more in physics problems involving displacement (the straight line distance between start and finish, with direction).

There are also two common types of speed:

  • Average speed: Total distance divided by total time. This is what the calculator returns.
  • Instantaneous speed: The speed at one exact moment, like the number on your speedometer right now.

Most real world planning uses average speed because it accounts for stops, slowdowns, and speed changes over the whole trip.

Calculate Average Speed

To calculate average speed, add up the total distance traveled. Then divide by the total time taken, including any stops.

Formula: Average Speed = Total Distance ÷ Total Time

If you drove 120 miles in 1 hour, stopped for 30 minutes, then drove another 60 miles in 1 hour, your average speed is:

180 miles ÷ 2.5 hours = 72 mph

  • 1 mph ≈ 0.4470 m/s
  • 1 knot ≈ 0.5144 m/s

To convert between mph and km/h manually, multiply mph by 1.609. To go the other direction, divide km/h by 1.609.

  • Use total trip distance, not displacement. If your route curves through a valley, enter the odometer distance, not the straight line distance.
