BMI = (weight in pounds × 703) ÷ (height in inches × height in inches)

Metric (kilograms and meters):

BMI = weight in kilograms ÷ (height in meters × height in meters)

  1. Convert height to inches: 70 inches
  2. Square the height: 70 × 70 = 4,900
  3. Multiply weight by 703: 160 × 703 = 112,480
  4. Divide: 112,480 ÷ 4,900 = 22.95

A BMI of about 23.0 falls in the healthy weight range.

Ideal Body Weight vs. Body Mass Index

These two concepts overlap but are not the same thing.

  • BMI places your current weight into a category (underweight, healthy, overweight, obese) based purely on your height and weight ratio.

Robinson Formula (1983):
