The formula is straightforward. Multiply wattage by hours of use, divide by 1,000 to convert to kilowatt-hours, then multiply by your rate per kWh. The result is your estimated energy cost for that appliance.

Your electricity rate appears on your utility bill, usually listed as a price per kWh. The U.S. average is roughly $0.16 per kWh, but rates vary widely by state, provider, and plan.

How to Calculate Your Monthly Electricity Bill

Your monthly electric bill reflects the total kilowatt-hours your home consumed, multiplied by your rate. Most bills also include fixed charges, taxes, and fees. This calculator focuses on the usage portion, which is the part you can control.

Appliance Usage and Energy Cost Calculation

To calculate the cost of a single appliance:

  1. Find the wattage on the appliance label or in the owner's manual.
  2. Estimate how many hours per day you use it.
  3. Multiply: watts × hours per day × 30 days = watt-hours per month.
  4. Divide by 1,000 to get kilowatt-hours (kWh).
  5. Multiply kWh by your electricity rate.

Example: A 1,500-watt space heater running 4 hours per day for 30 days uses 180 kWh. At $0.16 per kWh, that costs about $28.80 per month.

Repeat this for each appliance, then add the results together. The total gives you a reasonable estimate of your monthly electricity bill from usage alone.

Electricity Usage for Household Appliances

Different household appliances draw very different amounts of power. Here are common examples:

  • LED light bulb: 10 watts
  • Ceiling fan: 50 to 75 watts
  • Laptop: 50 watts
  • Refrigerator: 100 to 400 watts (varies by age and model)
  • Window AC unit: 500 to 1,500 watts
  • Electric clothes dryer: 2,000 to 5,000 watts
  • Central air conditioning: 3,000 to 5,000 watts

Homes in the South tend to use more (often 1,100+ kWh) because of air conditioning. Homes in milder climates may use under 600 kWh.

  • Switch to LED bulbs. Replacing a 60-watt incandescent with a 10-watt LED saves about 50 watts per bulb, per hour of use.
  • Adjust your thermostat. Each degree of setback saves roughly 1% to 3% on heating and cooling costs.
  • Use a programmable or smart thermostat. It reduces waste when you're asleep or away.
  • Run full loads. Dishwashers and washing machines use roughly the same electricity whether half-full or fully loaded.
  • Unplug or use power strips. Many electronics draw small amounts of power even when off (standby or "vampire" power). A smart power strip cuts this automatically.
  • Upgrade old appliances. Older refrigerators and AC units can use two to three times more electricity than newer, efficient models.
  • Air-seal and insulate. Reducing drafts means your HVAC system runs less.
