Not sure what body shape you have? Enter your bust, waist, and hip measurements into the free body type calculator above. It returns your shape category in seconds.

Knowing your body shape helps you shop smarter, dress with confidence, and understand your natural proportions. This calculator compares three simple measurements to classify your silhouette into one of five common female body types: hourglass, pear, inverted triangle, rectangle, or apple.

No sign-ups. No guesswork. Just a quick, practical estimate based on real numbers.

How the Body Type Calculator Works

The body type calculator compares the ratios between your bust, waist, and hip measurements. It does not use weight, height, or body fat percentage.

Here is what happens when you enter your numbers:

  1. The tool calculates the difference between your bust and hips.
  2. It checks how your waist compares to both your bust and hips.
  3. Based on those ratios, it assigns a shape category.

For example, if your bust and hips are roughly the same size and your waist is significantly narrower, the calculator returns an hourglass result. If your hips are wider than your bust, it leans toward a pear classification.

The math is straightforward. The calculator looks for proportion, not specific sizes. A size 4 and a size 16 can both be hourglass if their bust, waist, and hip ratios follow the same pattern.

How to Take Your Body Measurements

Accurate input gives you a reliable body type result. Rushing through this step is the most common reason people get a shape category that feels wrong.

Body Measurement Guide: Bust, Waist, and Hip

You need three numbers. Here is exactly where to measure:

  • Bust: Wrap the tape around the fullest part of your chest, across the nipple line. Keep it level across your back.
  • Waist: Measure around the narrowest part of your torso. This is usually an inch or two above your belly button. Bend sideways to find the natural crease if you are unsure.
  • Hip: Measure around the widest part of your hips and buttocks. Stand with your feet together.

Record each measurement in inches or centimeters. The calculator accepts either unit.

Using a Measuring Tape for Accurate Results

A flexible fabric or vinyl measuring tape works best. Avoid metal tapes or string (string stretches).

Follow these tips:

  • Stand straight with your arms relaxed at your sides.
  • Keep the tape snug against your skin but not tight. You should be able to slide one finger underneath.
  • Measure over thin clothing or bare skin. Bulky layers add inches.
  • Look in a mirror or ask someone to help. The tape should be level all the way around, not dipping or riding up in the back.
  • Take each measurement twice. If the numbers differ, use the average.

5 Female Body Types the Calculator Can Determine

The five shapes below cover the most widely recognized female body type categories. Most people fit neatly into one. Some fall between two, which is completely normal.

Hourglass Body: Defined Waist With Balanced Bust and Hips

The hourglass body shape features bust and hips that are close in measurement with a clearly defined waist. The waist is typically at least 8 to 10 inches smaller than both the bust and hips.

This is often called the hourglass figure. It creates a balanced upper body and lower body silhouette with a visible curve at the waist.

Example proportions: 36-26-36 or 40-30-40.

Pear Body Shape: Narrower Shoulders and Bust With Fuller Hips

The pear body shape (sometimes called a triangle) carries more volume in the lower body. Hips are noticeably wider than the bust, and the waist tapers in above the hip line.

Shoulders and bust tend to be narrower. The widest point is at the hips or thighs.

Example proportions: 34-27-40.

Inverted Triangle: Broad Shoulders and Bust With Narrower Waist and Hips

The inverted triangle shape features broader shoulders and bust with a slimmer lower body. Hips are narrower than the bust, and the waist may not have a dramatic indentation.

This body type is common among athletes with strong upper body development.

Example proportions: 40-32-35.

Rectangle Body Type: Similar Proportion Across Bust, Waist, and Hip

The rectangle body type (also called a straight body or banana shape) shows similar measurements across the bust, waist, and hip. The waist is not dramatically smaller than the other two.

This does not mean the body lacks curves. It means the proportions are relatively even from top to bottom.

Example proportions: 34-31-35.

Apple Body Shape: Fuller Midsection With Narrower Lower Body

The apple body shape carries more weight around the midsection. The waist measurement may be similar to or larger than the bust and hips. Shoulders can be broad while hips stay narrower.

People with an apple shape often have slimmer legs relative to their torso.

Example proportions: 38-37-36.

Find Your Body Shape and Dress for Your Silhouette

Once you know your shape category, you can use it as a starting point for choosing clothes that work with your proportions. The goal is not to "fix" anything. It is to highlight what you like and create the silhouette you want.

Shape and Dress Styles for Each Female Body Type

Hourglass body:

  • Fitted styles that follow your natural waistline.
  • Wrap dresses, belted coats, and high-waisted bottoms.
  • Avoid boxy cuts that hide your defined waist.

Pear body shape:

  • Draw attention upward with detailed tops, boat necks, or statement sleeves.
  • A-line skirts and bootcut pants balance the fuller hips.
  • Dark-colored bottoms with lighter or printed tops create visual balance.

Inverted triangle:

  • Create the illusion of curves at the hip with full skirts, wide-leg trousers, or patterned bottoms.
  • V-necks and simple necklines soften broad shoulders.
  • Avoid heavy shoulder pads or structured blazers.

Rectangle body type:

  • Belts and peplum tops can add shape at the waist.
  • Layered outfits and textured fabrics create dimension.
  • Both fitted and relaxed styles work well since proportions are balanced.

Apple body shape:

  • Empire waistlines and tops that skim the midsection without clinging.
  • Structured jackets that end at the hip.
  • Straight or skinny jeans highlight a slimmer lower body.

These are guidelines, not rules. Wear what feels right. Knowing your body shape just makes it easier to spot what will likely flatter your silhouette when you are browsing a rack or scrolling online.

Understanding Your Body Type Beyond the Calculator

How Upper Body and Lower Body Proportion Affect Your Silhouette

A body type calculator focuses on circumference (bust, waist, hip). But your overall silhouette is also shaped by factors the calculator does not measure:

  • Torso length vs. leg length. A long torso with shorter legs looks different from a short torso with longer legs, even at identical circumference ratios.
  • Shoulder width. Two people with the same bust measurement can have very different shoulder frames.
  • Height. Proportions that read as "pear" on a petite frame may read differently on a taller one.
  • Body fat distribution. Where your body stores fat changes your visual shape independent of bone structure.

Body shape can change over time. Hormonal shifts, aging, weight loss, and muscle gain all redistribute how your upper and lower body carry volume. You might measure as a rectangle at 25 and a pear at 45. Retaking your measurements periodically gives you a current snapshot.

Can men use a body type calculator? Yes, though male body type categories (ectomorph, mesomorph, endomorph) focus more on frame and metabolism than on fashion silhouettes. This calculator is designed as a female body type calculator, but the measurement method works for anyone.

Body Shape Calculator: What This Tool Can and Cannot Determine

What it can do:

  • Classify your proportions into a recognized shape category based on bust, waist, and hip measurements.
  • Give you a useful starting point for clothing choices and personal styling.
  • Provide a quick, free estimate you can run as often as you like.

What it cannot do:

  • Diagnose health conditions or replace a body fat calculator or medical assessment.
  • Account for bone structure, muscle mass, height, or where you carry weight within each measurement zone.
  • Capture every possible body shape. Some people fall between categories, and that is perfectly normal.
  • Predict how your shape will change over time.

This is an estimate based on three numbers. It is not a medical evaluation or a definitive label. Embrace your shape as a practical reference point, not a box to fit into.
